Annual Yaad-E-Murshid Free Polio and Disability Correction Camps

Countless polio survivors grapple with enduring disabilities. Tragically, between 2 to 10 out of every 100 individuals afflicted with poliovirus-induced paralysis succumb to its respiratory complications. Paralysis stands as its most grievous symptom. Even those who appear to have recovered fully may experience muscle pain, weakness, and susceptibility to post-polio syndrome.

The fatigue stemming from polio significantly hampers physical mobility and daily functionality. Recognizing these challenges, an annual Yaad-E-Murshid Free Polio and Disability Correction Camps endeavor to provide these survivors with the invaluable gift of mobility.

From a daunting challenge to an inspiring triumph, India's journey from being a major hub of polio cases to achieving polio-free status is a display of its resilience and determination.

In 1994, India bore the burden of over 60% of global polio cases.

However, through unwavering commitment and the implementation of the Pulse Polio Immunization Program, India administered approximately 1 billion doses of the polio vaccine to 172 million children annually for four consecutive years. This concerted effort led to the last reported case on January 13, 2011, marking a turning point in the battle against polio.

On February 24, 2012, India was removed from the list of "endemic countries with active poliovirus transmission" by the World Health Organization. On March 27, 2014, it was certified as a polio-free nation.

Despite this remarkable achievement, the fight against polio is not over.

As long as a single child remains infected, the threat of polio persists globally. Up to 20 million polio survivors worldwide face the risk of new disabilities even decades after their initial illness. It highlights the long-term consequences of the disease.

The commitment to eradicating polio goes beyond achieving zero cases. It entails ensuring the well-being of those living with disabilities and preventing any resurgence of the disease. Only when every child is protected and every survivor is supported, can we truly claim victory over polio!

Persisting Challenges: Post-Polio Disabilities and India's Disability Landscape

Although polio has been eliminated from India, many individuals still face challenges due to disabilities resulting from the disease. Disabilities can also arise from birth, accidents, illnesses, or other factors.

As per the 2011 Census reports, out of India's population of 1.21 billion, 2.68 crore individuals were classified as 'disabled,' constituting 2.21% of the total population.

The report also indicated that 69% of disabled persons resided in rural areas, while 31% lived in urban areas. However, The World Bank Report on Disability" (2017) suggests a wider prevalence range of 5% to 8% for disabilities in the entire Indian population.

Despite the strides made in eradicating polio, survivors continue to grapple with mobility challenges that profoundly impact their overall well-being. The lingering effects of the disease take a toll on their physical health, often resulting in a range of associated problems.

From chronic pain to decreased mobility and increased susceptibility to secondary health issues, polio survivors navigate a complex landscape of challenges that require ongoing support and understanding.

Challenges Faced by individuals with disabilities

Individuals with disabilities face a myriad of obstacles in their daily lives, impacting their ability to work, socialize, and engage in everyday activities. From physical barriers to discrimination and psychological tolls, the challenges are multifaceted and far-reaching.

Physical Challenges and Accessibility

Disabled people often face significant physical barriers in their daily lives. Limited mobility due to paralysis, visual or hearing impairments, difficulty accessing buildings lacking ramps, and problems using public transportation are just a few of them. These restrict their ability to work, socialize, and participate in everyday activities.

Social Stigma and Discrimination

Social stigma and exclusion often limit access to education, employment, and social opportunities. The pervasive perception of inferiority can lead to isolation and frustration, exacerbating the already complex landscape of disability. It eventually makes them feel isolated and frustrated.

Psychological Impacts

It adds another layer of difficulty. Living with a disability can lead to psychological challenges like anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, taking a toll on mental well-being. This also impacts the families and caretakers, making the caretaking task stressful and overwhelming.

Impact on Society and Nation

Beyond the personal realm, the Impact on Society and Nation is profound. When disabled individuals are not fully included and empowered, society misses out on their valuable contributions, hindering overall economic growth and development. Inclusivity isn't just a matter of fairness; it's an essential component of a thriving, equitable society.

Addressing these challenges requires a multifaceted approach, encompassing not just physical accommodations but also societal attitudes and support structures. By fostering inclusivity and empowering individuals with disabilities, we not only enrich their lives but also enrich our communities and societies as a whole.
